Nick Fazekas waived

Despite leading the Nuggets in rebounding in their last game (in only 12 minutes of play), the Denver Nuggets waived Nick Fazekas. The forward, who is from Colorado, signed a non-guaranteed, minimum-salary contract before the start of the team's training camp in late September.

Fazekas is the all-time leading scorer in University of Nevada history, and a 3-time WAC Player of the Year award winner. He averaged 4.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 26 games with the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers last year in his rookie season, and over 17 points and 8 rebounds in the NBADL.

After receiving a qualifying contract offer from the Clippers in the offseason, Fazekas played on the team's summer league squad. But on Aug. 1, the two parties agreed to dissolve the offer.

From the University of Nevada:

An extremely skilled athlete...has the ability to score inside and out...possesses a nice shooting touch and has great hands...two-time Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year...heads into his senior year ranked in Nevada’s career top 10 in just about every category... ranks second on the Nevada career scoring list with 1,812 career points and is just 65 points behind Edgar Jones, Nevada’s career-leading scorer (1,877 points, 1975-79)...has set Nevada’s career record for blocked shots with 144, overtaking Jones who had 142 in his career...also ranks in the Wolf Pack career top five for rebounding (fifth-900), field goals made (third-653) and free throws made (third-418)...has helped the Wolf Pack to Western Athletic Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his three seasons in Reno... has been named one of five national preseason All-Americans by Athlon and Street & Smith’s in their preseason basketball annals.

Fazekas became a starter midway through his freshman season and helped Nevada get to the NCAA Tournament four times. Before his arrival, the Pack hadn't played in the NCAA Tournament since 1985. Fazekas averaged 20.4 points and 11.1 rebounds, one of only three players who averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds in Division I this season.

Fazekas was signed by the University of Nevada for the 2003-04 season. From that point forward, Fazekas led the Wolf Pack to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances during his matriculation, including a run to the Sweet 16 as a freshman. He became the school's all-time leading scorer on November 18, 2006, when he surpassed the old record of 1,877 points scored by Edgar Jones in 1979. He also surpassed the single-season scoring record formerly set by Jones during the 2005-06 season. Fazekas also earned his third straight WAC Player of the Year for the 2006-07 season, a feat only matched by Utah's Keith Van Horn.

Fazekas attended Ralston Valley High School in Arvada, Colorado where he earned the statewide "Mr. Basketball-Colorado" for the 2002-03 season along with being a two-time 4A classification player of the year. As a senior he led the Mustangs to a 25-2 record and a state championship after an undefeated regular season and semi-finals appearance the previous year. During his high school career he wore number 22 and he continued to do so in college.
